Socio-Business Activism: Companies leaving Russia. Despite Russian attempts to prevent companies from leaving their country, the West has spoken in unison and the effects are beginning to be felt.
As a way of condemning the Russian war offensive on Ukrainian territory, dozens of companies expressed their repudiation with the situation. This is a clear sign of the changing times, in which companies and their leaders leave behind an old and inadequate image of an exclusive interest in profit, and seek to get involved in social causes and pass on their values – Business Activism
Sony, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Netflix, Spotify, IKEA, the list of giants that left the Russian markets goes on and the effects of these departures are already felt among the population, which has seen its purchasing power reduce drastically as a consequence of the devaluation of its currency – Russian ruble.
In addition to being unable to visit the physical spaces of retail chains such as McDonald’s and Starbucks, access to platforms such as YouTube (used by close to 70% of the Russian population), Facebook (close to 40%) and Twitter (about 14%) is also prevented in Russia.
Although there are promises of support from these western giants to their employees, the climate of uncertainty opens a wound within a society that may feel ostracized by the rest of the world, and that will also need to be taken care of.
In the face of such uncertainty, there remains hope that the talks between Ukraine and Russia will be successful and a peace agreement will be reached, restoring the values of justice and freedom.
