NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization - had its origin in 1949 in the middle of the Cold War with the Soviet bloc.
It’s currently made up of 30 countries that form the so-called Atlantic Alliance, a military alliance that constitutes a mutual defense system between member countries against external attacks on the organization.
With the current situation in Ukraine and the constant Russian threats, the possibility of more countries joining NATO is now real and increasingly likely. Finland and Sweden are examples of that, previously neutral countries that saw their security being threatened in the face of a Russia that seems to have no limits in its war ambition.
This accession process could mark a historic change in Europe's geopolitical landscape, as it will strengthen NATO's positions and bring it face to face with Russian borders.
The Russian attempt to prevent the enlargement of NATO and its presence along its borders seems to have been completely sidelined at a time when the accession of Finland and Sweden is very well under way, the only obstacle being the veto by Turkey.
The future is uncertain, but troubled times are ahead, and a shadow of uncertainty covers the world around us.
