Barcelos Figurines: Where Tradition Meets Genius

The figurines, particularly those from Barcelos (a certified artisanal product since 2008), perfectly embody the transformation of marginal crafts into expressions of artistic excellence.

This centuries-old art, with origins dating back to the 16th century, began by repurposing clay leftover from pottery's utilitarian production. These remnants were used to craft toys, often with whistles or small sound-making instruments, as well as decorative pieces created during leisure moments on the sidelines of the main craft.

Over time, the figurines evolved from a secondary activity to reaching their peak as signed works of art by artisans, especially from the late 1950s onwards.

The distinctive characteristics of Barcelos figurines are their use of vivid and expressive colors, as well as the diverse themes they portray—ranging from everyday life scenes to religious figures, representations of traditional professions, mythical creatures, and other fantastical elements.

Due to their handcrafted nature, each figure is individually molded and painted by hand, resulting in unique and unrepeatable creations that are collected as true works of art.

The most iconic figure of Barcelos' figurines is undoubtedly the Barcelos Rooster, a symbol of good luck and prosperity.

A fascinating curiosity: Did you know that its origin traces back to a medieval legend? A Galician man, on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, was unjustly sentenced to death. Before his execution, he requested to be taken to the judge responsible for his conviction. When brought before him, the man pointed to a roasted rooster and declared that if he were innocent, the rooster would crow. Miraculously, the rooster crowed, saving the man's life and turning the figure into a symbol of faith and hope.

Today, the Barcelos Rooster is recognized worldwide as one of Portugal’s greatest cultural emblems.

From Barcelos—a city made beautiful not only by its exceptional location but also by its craftsmanship—to the world, offering a supreme and qualitative enjoyment of some of the finest Portugal has to offer.
