AI in Law

First and foremost, what is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the science of enabling machines to process information like humans. AI technology can process large amounts of data in seconds, unlike humans. The goal of AI is to be able to do things such as recognize patterns, make decisions, and judge like humans.

It seems like this is an easy technology to manufacture, right? Not quite, it involves millions of pieces of data that can be added by a simple database or by a millisecond search through an API.

How can AI help a Law Firm?

With the use of AI-powered legal research software, lawyers and legal professionals can quickly scan and search large databases of regulations, statutes, practice areas, case laws, and more. Lawyers and legal professionals can focus on other crucial tasks and save time by conducting more thorough research more quickly.

One of the most time-consuming tasks that a lawyer or law practitioner has is filling out forms. With good data management software, this situation can be improved.

Document automation can be added to this software. With that, it’s possible to create intelligent templates. What does that mean?

It becomes possible to automatically fill form fields directly from case records into the templates, saving time and effort. Legal document automation provides an efficient process for producing letters, agreements, motions, pleadings, bills, and other legal documents.

Nowadays, the environmental footprint is an important topic for every company or business, and law firms are no different.

Electronic document storage has similar challenges to hard copy document storage. Electronic records take less physical space, but sorting and finding documents can still be a problem.

These challenges can be overcome with a well-structured cloud system, but it’s not an easy task to do from scratch. This is where AI-driven document management software stores and organizes legal files, including contracts, case files, notes, emails, etc. This method of storing and organizing digital files, along with full-text search, makes documents a lot easier to find.

 Is AI an ethical tool?

AI software is a never-ending technology, and its learning potential is limitless.

That being said, there are discussions involving the potential danger it might bring in the future.

Examples:

  • Potential bias in which AI algorithms can perpetuate or maybe increase current biases, creating a more unequal and divided society.
  • Loss of control where, as AI becomes more self-reliant and self-aware, it could grow to be tough for humans to exert control over its moves, which could lead to catastrophic consequences, as AI could make moves that might be dangerous, both deliberately or unintentionally.
